When the Crusades began, chainmail was the knightly armor of choice. The hauberk was the main garment, which was a mail shirt that covered only a portion of the arm. Moving into the 12th century, hauberks expanded in length to cover the entire arm. It was during this century that mail gauntlets entered the scene as well. The 13th century saw the integration of metal plates combined with mail and brought about plate gauntlets and mail leg protection. As the 14th century swung into full force, plate armor took over and the breastplate was introduced. It was also during this time that plate armor was implemented for arm and leg protection. The 15th century closed out the Crusades with full suits of plate armor, which proved to be the best defensive wear. With every phase of armor development during the Crusades, the knights’ potential for success was maximized and yours can be too. In keeping with true warrior spirit, Armor Venue is pleased to offer our line of Crusader armor that’s sure to empower and protect.
